Artist of the Week, David De Roach

Stick with it, get grounded and get present!  The more open in your approach the more possibilities arise.  You get into the flow and things start to happen.  It's often simply a shift in ones thinking and changing mediums.  In this case David started having fun, mark making using a bottle top, dry brush, ink, paint and a roll of beautiful rice paper - liberating.

Artist of the Week, Julie Stewart

Julie's translation is robust and primal. She has a very tactile approach using her colours wisely to enhance her work with just the right accents.

Artist of the Week, Sarah Healy

There is an intricate delicacy about Sarah's approach to drawing.  It is savoured and patiently given the time it requires to breath and land, so to speak.  We all have our own temperament and Sarah has found and acknowledged hers.  

Artist of the Week, Anthony Syndicas

Anthony's marks are swift and well orchestrated, as if to a symphony all of his own.  This comes with an accomplished drawing practice that is very grounded and present.

Artist of the Week, Kris Wood

The physicality of Kris's marks is essentially what underpins her work. You can't borrow something like that, you can't confine it.  You just need to be very present, very honest, and keep building upon your signature as soon as you get a glimpse of it.

NEW VENUE, NEW TIME, Starting WEDNESDAY 1ST MAY

Hooray, we've found a fab new venue.  I'm sure a lot of you would know of ST ALi Coffee Roasters, they have a pretty good reputation for making the best coffee in Melbourne.  Well, this is Roar Drawings new home. As of Wednesday 1st May, our weekly Life Drawing classes will be back on.

Due to a miscommunication at BSG, unfortunately there are NO CLASSES at the moment.  We are currently looking for a NEW VENUE.  Hopefully we'll be up and running in a few weeks.  Stay tuned.

Artist of the Week, Belinda Evans

Continuous line, continuous ramblings, taking notes, making discoveries, pausing to reflect and changing tempo.......they all come into the equation, and it's so particularly evident here in Belinda's work.  It's this open approach that creates such dignified mark making.

Artist of the Week, Sue Barmos

Last week Sue experimented with drawing by using a few pastels together at the same time, mixing it up, opening up the possibilities and making new unexpected connections.  The results can often be very rewarding.  It is so necessary to play and experiment, so that you can nurture and develop a progressive artistic practice.

This work is powerful, not because it is meticulously thought out, but because it has so much integrity.  It is clearly evident that this work was produced by Sarah's hand, that it came directly from its source without any compromise.  These are highly charged, focused artworks, indicative of her temperament at the time.

Sara has managed to immerse herself in the moment.  With every pose, I feel it, feel the weight, the lightness, the relaxation and exultation.  This is what we are talking about when we look for 'essences.' By developing a strong practice your technique naturally evolves, the question is, how much do you challenge yourself to keep moving forward?

Artist of the Week, Rho Sandberg

For some of us we dance around the surface, the perimeters of our well conformed minds.  It can take a great deal of persistence to develop a strong trust in our own practice, where by we can slip into 'the zone.'  Rho is fully engaged when she works, orchestrating her way around the page at a rapid pace.  There lies a seamless musicality in her work, that is anything but inhibited.

Artist of the Week, Saren Dobkins

Saren's marks are spirited, descriptive and ultimately felt.  In abandoning the learnt behaviour which holds on tightly to depicting the anatomy in every minute detail, her signature comes through, revealing a delightful translation that is captivating and entirely her own.  

Artist of the Week, John Puli

The beauty of artwork is to view an image through the Artist's eyes, to be compelled to respond in some way by their story.  John has a very distinctive style which is not compromised and reflects his character.  His marks are honest, joyful and fully committed.

Artist of the Week, Mike Corlett

If you have the courage to break the restraints of your logical, orderly mind, the results can be surprisingly poignant.  Mike allows himself to be informed not only by what he is seeing but in his quality of translation.
